Tutoring and Mentoring - Public School Success Team (PSST) is a non-profit corporation created to increase graduation rates in the Healdsburg public school system.  PSST recruits and trains tutors, coaches, and mentors to work with 5th & 6th grade students and provides ongoing support.  No experience necessary.  Just one hour of your time each week could have lifetime benefits.  Next tutor training:  Wednesday, September 15th, 2:30 - 4pm, Fitch Mountain School, Healdsburg.  To help, contact Barbara Epstein by email or call (707) 473-0902.  Although supported by a number of AAUW members, this is not an AAUW program.

Raven Players/Raven Theater - The 2010-2011 season of the Raven Players begins with a production of "Rent!"  This Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical is a modern re-telling of Puccini's classic opera La Boheme.  Volunteers needed for several positions from 8/13 - 9/5.  Contact Linda Swezey by email or call (707) 395-0599.

Ongoing Programs:
Career Choices - As school budgets get trimmed, high school students are less able to avail themselves of school counseling services.  Headed by Leslie and Todd Everett, Career Choices helps students at Healdsburg High School learn about potential careers and what skills and experiences are needed to obtain jobs and careers of their choice.  Due to the success of the program, developed in 2008 by Dee McGuffey and Judy Edmonds, Career Choices now partners with Rotary of Healdsburg to offer panels and services to hundreds of students.

Reading Rocks - This program is designed to help first graders improve their reading skills.  Many AAUW members volunteer weekly to go to the six first-grade classes at Healdsburg Elementary School.  They listen to children individually reading stories chosen by their teachers, helping them when needed, but mostly encouraging them one-on-one.  Since the introduction of Reading Rocks to the classrooms, reading test scores have greatly improved.  For more information, contact Cynthia Iverson.

Volunteers in Partnership with Community (Community VIPs) - In support of the local community, AAUW members often volunteer to help other non-profit organization with their main fundraisng events, such as luncheons, dinners, garden parties, fairs, etc.  Contact Judy Edmonds for more information.
Expanding Your Horizons - An annual one-day conference designed to nurture 7th & 8th grade girls' interest in math & science.  The Healdsburg Branch of AAUW supports the efforts of EYH with volunteer assistants and sponsorship for the participants.  Contact Margaret Johnson for more information.

GEMS (Girls engaged in Math & Science) - This program, headed by Sue Campbell, takes middle- and high-school girls interested in math, science and technology on field trips to workplaces to meet professionals in these fields and to see how these skills are utilized.  Our Tech Trek graduates are the main focus, but other girls with similar interests are welcome and encouraged to join.
